He created a new genre of metrical sermons called kontakia. He was prolific so numerous works by him survive.

While Romanos' works number in the hundreds this volume contains translations of seventeen kontakia, including the Aka|From the Back Cover|Romanos the Melodist, a sixth-century deacon in Constantinople, is regarded as the premier poet of the Greek-speaking Christian church. His kontakia are elaborate, dramatic hymns designed to be sung before a congregation on major feast days.
